We made a quick trip to Cozumel in April 2022 in part to celebrate a birthday but also to visit old friends for the first time since the pandemic appeared.
As a general observation, the pandemic seemed to have hit Cozumel hard economically. There were a number of old favorites that had closed.
We stayed at our old reliable Casa Mexicana, which after a couple years of lower occupancy was showing a little wear around the edges but was still offering a comfortable room, a hardworking staff trying to please and an excellent breakfast.
We are always on the lookout for a quality massage and we were quite happy to visit Spa del Sol for the first time. It is just around the corner and a short walk up Calle 5 from the Casa Mexicana. The space was very clean & comfortable and everyone from reception to the masseuse was very professional.
We stopped in Colores y Sabores for a sidewalk dinner one night and snacks another. It’s almost next door to Spa del Sol so again this was a short walk from the hotel. The food has always been good there and the staff very pleasant and on this trip we also enjoyed the low volume live music, which was a nice alternative to the usual too loud sidewalk bands.
We ate at many of our old favorites: (twice at) Pescaderia San Carlos, (twice at) Los Sera’s Tacos, La Choza, Rock ‘N Java and El Candela, The one place we tried for the first time was a great success.
We chose Buccanos at Night to splurge on a birthday celebration and were very pleased with our experience. It was raining that evening so we ate inside but the grounds looked beautiful. Since this was our first visit we weren’t familiar with how to get to the main indoor dining area but eventually we figured out it was around a corner and up a flight of stairs.
Service was good, the food and cocktails were really excellent and the restaurant comped a dessert to the birthday boy! We’ll be happy to visit again on our next trip to the Island.
